After the shocking ending of Squid Game Season 3 and the announcement of a new season of Squid Game: The Challenge, fans everywhere are buzzing with questions, especially wondering if there might be a spin-off show coming soon. It’s starting to feel more possible than ever.
The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, who also directed and produced the show, has already said that Season 3 will be the last official season of Squid Game. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the Squid Game universe is completely over. There could still be more stories told in other ways.
In the final episode of Season 3, there was a surprising celebrity appearance that made fans think, “Is this a hint at a spin-off?” But when Hwang Dong-hyuk was asked about it in an interview with Variety, he said it actually wasn’t related to any new project. So, for now, that cameo might not mean what people thought.
Still, a lot of people are trying to process how intense the last season was, with major characters dying and everything ending on such a chilling note. One of the show’s stars, Lee Jung-jae, opened up about what he hopes the audience takes away from it all. He told The Hollywood Reporter something really meaningful:
He said that in life, we all go through pain. People hurt us, betray us, and it can make us feel angry or bitter. But even with all that, we still have to keep living together in this world. He hopes that Squid Game reminds us to be understanding, to treat each other with dignity, and to work together toward peace. If we can do that, even when it’s hard, there’s still hope for a kinder, more united future.
Since Squid Game has become one of Netflix’s biggest hits ever, it made total sense that it came back for a second and third season, both of which were filmed back to back. But now, many are asking if the show will continue beyond Season 3. While it looks like there won’t be a Season 4, there are still whispers and rumours about possible spin-offs.
So even though the main Squid Game story might be ending, the world it created could still live on in other exciting ways.
Why won’t there be a Squid Game season 4?
There won’t be a Squid Game Season 4, and that was always the plan from the beginning.
Last year, the creator of the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, wrote a heartfelt letter to fans. In it, he confirmed that Season 3 would be the final chapter. He shared how excited he was to announce the release of Season 2 and also to let everyone know that Season 3 would officially bring the story to a close.
He explained that what started as a small idea, a seed, had now grown into something big and beautiful. And now, it was time to finish the story in a meaningful way.
By adding two more seasons after the wildly successful first one, Hwang Dong-hyuk made sure that fans could get a proper ending, especially for Gi-hun, the main character. For many directors, it’s common to have a clear plan in mind from the start, knowing how many seasons their story needs. That’s exactly what happened with Squid Game. It was never meant to go on forever.
In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Dong-hyuk shared that while writing Seasons 2 and 3, he realised he needed to bring everything, the deadly game and Gi-hun’s personal journey, to a proper end. He felt it was time to deliver a strong message to the audience:
He wanted to remind us that if we only chase our own self-interest, avoid responsibility, and refuse to make sacrifices or come together as a society, we won’t have a future. That’s the deeper meaning behind Gi-hun’s final journey.
Aside from wanting to keep the story focused and meaningful, another big reason for ending the show is how much pressure and stress Dong-hyuk has gone through over the years. Creating Squid Game wasn’t easy at all.
He told The Hollywood Reporter that after six years of being completely consumed by the show, thinking about it every single day, he does feel a bit relieved now that it’s ending. At the same time, it’s emotional for him. Saying goodbye to something that’s been such a huge part of his life leaves him feeling a little empty too.
But he also said something really sweet: if fans love Season 3 just as much as they did Season 1, that love will make it easier for him to let go.
So even though Season 4 isn’t happening, Squid Game is ending with intention, love, and a powerful message. And sometimes, ending something with care is the most beautiful way to honour it.
