28 Years Later Trilogy: The original team behind the 2002 film 28 Days Later is back. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are working together once again to bring fans a brand-new chapter in the story of the rage virus. But this time, they’re going much bigger than before.

Will there be a 28 Years Later trilogy?

Back in January 2024, a report from The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Boyle and Garland weren’t just making one film, they were aiming for a full trilogy. That means three connected movies, continuing the story that began more than two decades ago. Boyle is directing the first film, which is called 28 Years Later, and Garland is writing the scripts for all three films. This shows that they’re both fully committed to shaping the entire trilogy from the ground up.

After that announcement, it was confirmed that the second film in the trilogy had already started shooting, even before the first film was released. This second movie is being directed by Nia DaCosta, a filmmaker known for her work on recent major Hollywood films. The fact that the second movie was filmed back-to-back with the first means the team isn’t waiting around. They are moving quickly to bring this trilogy to life.

The third film hasn’t started filming yet, but Boyle has already said that he plans to come back as director for that one too. It will likely begin production after the first film is released in cinemas.

This new trilogy is also getting a much bigger budget than the original movies. The first two 28 films were made on small budgets, $8 million and $15 million. In contrast, each of the new films is expected to cost up to $75 million. That’s a huge jump and shows how much faith the studio has in this project.

The first movie, 28 Years Later, is set to come out in cinemas on 20th June 2025. If all goes as planned, fans can expect the second and third films to follow not too long after, continuing the story of a world struggling to survive nearly three decades after the rage virus first broke out.
