After the intense ending of Squid Game Season 3, director Hwang Dong Hyuk has finally shared some updates about the future of the series. While many fans were hoping for a Season 4, Hwang has made it clear that the main story is officially over. He believes Seong Gi Hun’s journey is complete, and he has no plans to continue that storyline. However, he’s not entirely closing the door on the Squid Game world. Instead, he’s considering creating a spin-off that explores different characters and untold stories.

In a recent interview on June 30, Hwang explained that he has already delivered all the messages he wanted through the original story. That’s why continuing the main plot doesn’t make sense to him anymore. Rather than pushing the same storyline further, he’s interested in trying something new. This new direction wouldn’t focus so much on deep social commentary like before. Instead, it would be more about giving fans something entertaining, fresh, and maybe even lighter in tone.

Interestingly, there were already small hints in Season 3 that something like this could happen. One scene shows Director Choi searching Captain Park’s home, and on the wall, there are two mysterious photos. One is of Captain Park with the man known for playing Ddakji (Gong Yoo), and the other is with the Frontman (Lee Byung Hun). Fans may remember Gong Yoo’s character as the one who first invited Gi Hun into the deadly game. He hasn’t had much screen time, but these little clues suggest that he might have a deeper backstory that hasn’t been explored yet.

Hwang admitted that he started wondering about the meaning behind those photos. He imagined moments that weren’t shown on screen, like what kind of relationship these characters have or how they ended up involved in the game operations. That curiosity sparked the idea that there could be a whole new story just waiting to be told, focused on the lesser-known characters behind the scenes.

Although there’s no official plan yet, Hwang said he’s open to the idea of a spin-off. If he decides to move forward, he wants to do it in a way that feels more playful and creative, without the pressure of delivering a big message. He simply wants to make something fun for the fans. Right now, it’s just an idea, but Hwang seems genuinely excited about the possibility of exploring this world in a different way.
