It’s official – Canva has confirmed that it will uphold one of the most beloved features of Affinity software: the perpetual license, offering users the option of a one-time fee without the need for ongoing subscriptions. This commitment to the “perpetual model” is one of four assurances outlined in a joint statement from the Canva and Affinity teams, aimed at reassuring users following Canva’s acquisition of Affinity.
While there may be plans to introduce subscription options for Affinity’s creative apps in the future, both teams have affirmed that the perpetual license will remain available as an alternative. This decision comes as a relief to many users who appreciate the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the one-off fee model.
The acquisition raised concerns about the fate of Affinity’s perpetual license, particularly in a market dominated by subscription-based models like Adobe’s Creative Cloud. However, the joint statement from Canva and Affinity emphasizes a commitment to fair pricing and the continuation of perpetual licenses as a cornerstone of the Affinity offering.
In addition to maintaining the perpetual license option, the pledges outlined in the statement include ongoing support for Affinity as a standalone product, providing free access for schools and registered nonprofits, and actively engaging with the design community to guide future developments.
As a testament to this commitment, Affinity is already gearing up to introduce user-requested features, such as variable font support, blend and width tools, auto object selection, multi-page spreads, and ePub export, all as free updates scheduled for release in 2024. This proactive approach demonstrates the companies’ dedication to meeting the needs and expectations of their users while ensuring the continued growth and development of Affinity’s software suite.
