Why was J-Hope’s Killin’ It Girl banned from KBS shows?

J-Hope has been dominating the charts with his latest single Killin’ It Girl, but the road to full promotion hasn’t been entirely smooth. Despite its massive popularity, the track initially hit a hurdle when KBS banned it from being performed or aired on their programs due to a violation of their content guidelines. However, after a second review, the network has officially cleared the song, giving J-Hope the green light to continue promoting it on their platforms.

The issue began on June 11, when KBS ruled that Killin’ It Girl couldn’t be broadcast. Their reasoning was that the original lyrics contained direct references to specific brand names, which they deemed promotional. This violated Article 46 of their broadcasting review code, which restricts commercial content in music lyrics. As a result, J-Hope was temporarily blocked from performing the song on KBS shows like Music Bank.

But instead of letting the ban stand, J-Hope’s team submitted a revised version of the track with the problematic lines edited out. KBS reviewed the new version ahead of a scheduled Music Bank performance, and on July 9, they officially announced that the song now meets their standards. Both the solo version and the one featuring American rapper GloRilla have been approved for broadcast, making them eligible for airplay on KBS TV and radio.

The timing couldn’t be better. Since its release on June 13, Killin’ It Girl has been a fan favorite. Blending pop and hip-hop influences, the song explores the thrill of love at first sight. Its music video made waves too, racking up 1 million views on YouTube in just 43 minutes—a record-breaking feat for a K-pop act this year.

Now that the KBS issue is resolved, J-Hope is free to fully promote his hit on one of South Korea’s biggest broadcasting networks. It’s another win for the BTS star, showing not only his global reach but also his persistence in making sure his music gets the platform it deserves.
