In a candid appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast (May 5 episode), The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey bravely opened up about their past battle with emetophobia—a severe fear of vomit—that once left them housebound.
Describing the experience as a “really intense fear,” Ramsey explained how even the slightest nausea, either in themselves or someone else, would spark overwhelming anxiety. “The whole thing is absolutely terrifying,” they said.
At the height of their struggle, Ramsey turned to The Thrive Program by Emetophobia Free to seek help. Thankfully, they now say they’re “not emetophobic anymore”—though they still have a heightened reaction compared to most.
The fear was so severe at one point that they avoided going out altogether, saying: “I couldn’t even leave my house … because everything outside was a threat.” Even today, contact with someone sick can trigger obsessive self-monitoring and anxiety over potential illness.
Now starring in The Last of Us Season 2 alongside Pedro Pascal and Isabella Merced, Ramsey’s openness offers comfort and validation for others facing invisible mental health battles.
