Sheryl Sandberg, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Meta (formerly Facebook), announced on Facebook in May 2024 that she would be leaving the company’s board. Sandberg, known for her significant contributions to Facebook, had been with the company since its startup phase. Although she stepped down as COO in 2022, she remained on the board to facilitate a smooth transition.
In her departure announcement, Sandberg mentioned that Meta’s leadership, including founder Mark Zuckerberg, had demonstrated the strength and favorable positioning of the company for the future. She expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory and considered it the right time to step away. Despite leaving the board, Sandberg will continue to serve as an advisor to Meta.
Sandberg is renowned not only for her corporate role but also for her philanthropic efforts. She authored the book “Lean In” in 2013, addressing challenges women encounter in the corporate world. Additionally, she is involved in philanthropy, particularly focused on issues such as women’s leadership challenges and addressing rape and sexual violence in war.
In response to Sandberg’s announcement, Mark Zuckerberg thanked her for her extraordinary contributions and dedication to Meta. Sandberg’s departure marked the end of her 14-year tenure as Meta’s COO and a 12-year service on the board. The company reported all-time-high revenue when she made her departure announcement.
As for Sandberg’s future plans, she indicated that she would devote her time to philanthropic efforts after leaving Meta. With an estimated net worth of $1.9 billion, according to The Street, Sandberg is financially secure, and her departure from Meta doesn’t suggest an immediate need for new employment.
