Eminem’s publishing company, Eight Mile Style, has taken legal action against Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, accusing them of copyright infringement. The lawsuit, filed on May 30 and made public on June 3, alleges that Meta has allowed unauthorized use of 243 of Eminem’s songs across its social media platforms. According to the court documents, Meta’s features such as Original Audio and Reels enable users to easily take clips of Eminem’s music without permission or proper licensing.
The complaint argues that these tools not only permit but encourage users to steal Eminem’s tracks to use in their videos, often without giving credit or obtaining the necessary rights. As a result, Eight Mile Style is seeking damages exceeding \$109 million. Eminem claims that Meta has infringed his copyrights by storing, reproducing, and exploiting his songs without authorization, causing significant harm to the value of his original work and resulting in lost profits. The lawsuit demands compensation for these damages, or alternatively, the maximum statutory damages of \$150,000 per infringed song, which totals over \$109 million for the 243 tracks involved.
The lawsuit highlights how easily users on Facebook and Instagram can search for Eminem’s songs and apply them to their Reels or Stories, all without proper licensing or credit. Among the extensive catalog listed in the filing are well-known hits like “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem has previously spoken about the deep personal importance of his music, describing rap as a therapeutic outlet that allows him to channel his life experiences and struggles into his art.
This legal move is part of Eminem’s ongoing efforts to protect his artistic legacy and ensure his rights as a creator are respected. Over the years, the Detroit rapper has a track record of aggressively defending his music against copyright violations and disputes over royalties. The lawsuit against Meta underscores his continued commitment to safeguarding his music and the value it holds.
