The personal life of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been marked by tragedy and challenges, particularly concerning his two sons, Garrett and Britt Reid.
Garrett Reid struggled with substance abuse and legal issues, facing multiple charges related to drug possession and distribution. His struggles culminated tragically in August 2012 when he passed away from a heroin overdose at the age of 29.
Britt Reid, Andy Reid’s second son, also faced legal troubles and a history of substance abuse. In November 2007, Britt received a jail sentence and probation for selling drugs out of his parents’ house. His older brother Garrett was simultaneously sentenced for causing a car accident while under the influence of heroin. Additionally, Garrett faced further legal consequences while serving time in jail for attempting to smuggle prescription drugs.
In January 2007, Britt faced gun and drug charges stemming from a road rage incident. Despite these challenges, Britt appeared to be getting his life back on track until a tragic car accident in February 2021.
In April 2021, Britt Reid was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) for his involvement in a car crash that left a 5-year-old girl, Ariel Young, with serious brain injuries. Reid admitted to consuming alcohol and Adderall before driving, and his blood alcohol concentration was found to be above the legal limit. Ariel Young spent two months hospitalized, fighting for her life, and suffered significant injuries.
In November 2022, Britt Reid was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the crash. The victim’s family expressed disappointment in the sentence and opposed a plea deal that would have resulted in probation for Reid.
The incident led to the end of Britt Reid’s coaching career with the Kansas City Chiefs. He had previously served as an assistant coach for the team, but his contract was not renewed following the crash. Britt Reid apologized publicly, expressing remorse to Ariel Young and her family, as well as to the Chiefs organization and its fans. Despite his promising career in football, Reid’s actions and their consequences have had a profound impact on both his personal life and professional aspirations.
