Production for Emily in Paris Season 5 faced unexpected disruptions just days after filming began in Rome. According to a source speaking to US Weekly, the announcement of Pope Leo XIV — who succeeded Pope Francis after his passing — triggered extensive global media coverage near the filming locations, causing constant noise from news helicopters.
Lily Collins (Emily) and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie) were filming near the Spanish Steps when multiple takes had to be halted and redone due to the overwhelming noise. “The noise is crazy,” the insider said.
The Pope announcement on May 8th, delivered by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti at St. Peter’s Basilica, attracted huge crowds and media presence, complicating filming logistics.
Despite shooting in Rome, creator Darren Star reaffirmed the show’s core setting remains Paris, joking, “She didn’t change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome.” Sylvie’s company has an office in Rome, explaining some story scenes there, but a permanent move to Rome is off the table. French President Emmanuel Macron has also expressed strong support to keep the show rooted in Paris.
Looking ahead, the production is exploring other French locations like Saint-Tropez or Megeve for future episodes.
