However, despite Swift being in the spotlight and cheering for her boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs, Serena made the decision to hold back when the game took a turn for the worse for the Chiefs. Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, were eager to introduce Olympia to Swift, but with the Chiefs losing, Serena chose to respect the moment.
In a new interview with Time published on April 16, Williams shared that she was ready to approach Swift and ask for the autograph, but once the game’s emotional intensity ramped up, she decided it wasn’t the right time. She explained, “It’s hard when your team is losing. I totally get it.” So, Olympia went without the autograph that night, but Serena’s choice highlighted her deep maternal instincts.
Williams also spoke out in defense of Swift after the pop star was booed by fans when her image was shown on the jumbotron. Serena expressed how awful she felt about the situation, tweeting support for Swift afterward: “I love you @taylorswift13 don’t listen to those booo!!”
Additionally, the interview touched on Serena’s cameo during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance, where she briefly cripple-walked during Lamar’s diss track aimed at Drake. While fans speculated it might be a subtle jab at her brief romance with Drake in 2011, Serena quickly shut down the rumors, saying it was purely coincidental and that she would never do that intentionally.
Though Olympia didn’t get the autograph, she surely got a valuable lesson in grace and empathy from her mom, proving once again that Serena Williams is not only a sports legend but also a wonderful role model and a class act.
