It’s been years since Gabriel Macht hung up Harvey Specter’s legendary pinstripes on Suits, but as fans say, legends never really disappear—they just wait for the perfect moment to return. And that moment arrived with Suits LA, the new spinoff series expanding the beloved legal universe. Naturally, fans were buzzing: Why did Macht decide to step back into the shoes of Harvey Specter?
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Macht finally addressed the question that had everyone curious.
He started by reflecting on the overwhelming fan love Suits has continued to receive long after its finale. “I’ve met people who’ve watched the series four times, seven times, even 15 times all the way through,” he said. With 134 episodes in the bag, the numbers are mind-blowing. He called the show’s continued popularity “complete insanity,” yet deeply humbling. Macht pointed out that the show wasn’t just a hit in the U.S.—it found fans around the world.
“So to have another round felt amazing,” he said, acknowledging how much Suits had opened doors for him professionally.
His return didn’t happen out of nowhere, though. Macht recalled a conversation he had with series creator Aaron Korsh, who pitched the idea of reintroducing original characters into the new Suits LA universe, led by Stephen Amell’s character, Ted Black.
Macht, protective of the legacy they’d built, was cautious. “I told Aaron, ‘Tell me more. Because we wrapped these characters up really gracefully. I feel like we gave the fans the ending they deserved,’” he recalled.
But what won him over? The evolving relationship between Ted Black and Harvey Specter—something new, but familiar enough to spark interest. That storyline, combined with the excitement of stepping into this expanded universe, ultimately convinced him to reprise the role.
You can catch Suits LA airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock, where Ted Black—and a returning Harvey Specter—are sure to bring fresh drama to the courtroom.
