Who Was Jess Hurrell?
Jess Hurrell, based in London, began her career as a journalist at a local newspaper. After the birth of her daughter, she stepped away from the fast-paced newsroom to focus on her passion for interiors. She launched her blog, Gold Is A Neutral, which combined practical design advice with aspirational home transformations. Her Instagram content also highlighted her personal life, from family trips and favorite recipes to little everyday joys, making her a relatable and beloved figure.
Over time, Jess built a following of 94,000 on Instagram, creating a supportive community that admired her warmth and authenticity. Earlier this year, she shared with her followers the reality of her eight-year-long battle with cancer, which began with a stage 2 melanoma diagnosis.
Jess Hurrell’s Brave Fight Against Cancer
Jess’s journey was both inspiring and heartbreaking. Her cancer progressed to stage 4, and she underwent surgery to remove a malignant mole and lymph nodes, followed by two years of immunotherapy. Despite treatment, she embraced life’s small joys and remained hopeful. Later, the illness spread to her brain, requiring radiotherapy until January 2025, when she was finally declared cancer-free. In her own words, she expressed her determination to live fully:
“My treatment recently ended, and as of January, I was cancer-free. Who knows what’s around the corner? But I’m determined to keep living life to the max and exploring the world with my little family.”
Her Family Confirms the Loss
Jess’s husband, David, confirmed her passing in a heartfelt post on her Instagram. The couple had been together for nearly 25 years, having first met at school, and were about to celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary. They are parents to a 12-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. In his tribute, David wrote:
“Happy anniversary, darling. Can’t believe we didn’t make it to 14, but I’ve had the most incredible 25 years and am blessed to have met you. Sleep tight, xxx.”
Jess Hurrell’s legacy of warmth, creativity, and authenticity has left a lasting mark on her followers and the interiors community. Her courage in facing cancer and her dedication to sharing life’s joys will be remembered by all who knew and admired her.
