Jay North, the beloved actor best known for his role as Dennis Mitchell in Dennis the Menace, passed away at the age of 73 on April 6, 2025, due to colorectal cancer. His death was confirmed by Laurie Jacobson, a close friend who had known North for over three decades. He passed away at his home in Lake Butler, Florida.

North’s portrayal of Dennis Mitchell, the mischievous young boy who frequently got into trouble, made him a household name. From 1959 to 1963, he starred in the popular CBS sitcom Dennis the Menace, where his character, often seen in a striped shirt and overalls, caused chaos in his neighborhood, particularly for his neighbor, the cantankerous George Wilson (played by Joseph Kearns). North’s portrayal of Dennis made him one of the most iconic child actors of his time, with Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry playing his on-screen parents.

In a 1993 interview with The Los Angeles Daily News, North shared painful memories of being abused by his aunt and uncle, who were responsible for caring for him on set while his mother worked. North revealed that his caretakers would physically and emotionally abuse him, especially if he took more than one or two takes during filming, often threatening him or resorting to physical punishment.
