Her musical journey began in the early 1960s when she co-founded the band the Soulettes with her cousin Constantine. Rita’s path crossed with Bob Marley when the Soulettes secured a recording contract at Studio One, where Bob was instrumental in coaching the group. Rita and Bob fell in love and married in 1966. She later joined the Wailers for a brief period, contributing vocals to several tracks.
Despite personal challenges within their marriage, including infidelity issues, Rita remained involved in music. Alongside Bob, she formed the harmony group I Three, contributing to the iconic tunes that propelled Marley’s international recognition.
In 1976, Bob and Rita survived an assassination attempt at their home, just before the Smile Jamaica concert aimed at promoting peace between rival political factions in Jamaica. Despite the traumatic event, both Rita and Bob appeared on stage at the concert, displaying resilience.
Following Bob’s passing in 1981, Rita continued to honor his legacy by converting their home into the Bob Marley Museum and establishing various charitable organizations in his name. She embarked on extensive philanthropic endeavors, adopting children from Ethiopia and supporting various causes in Ghana.
Rita’s philanthropic efforts were recognized, earning her honors and awards from both Jamaica and abroad. She established the Rita Marley Foundation, focusing on ending poverty in developing nations, and received honorary degrees from prestigious universities.
In recent years, Rita has kept a lower public profile after suffering a stroke in 2016 while on holiday in Miami. Her contributions to music, culture, and philanthropy remain integral parts of her enduring legacy.
