Stranger Things Season Five has finally started, and the first batch of episodes gave us everything we were waiting for. All the characters are back together, the story feels bigger than ever, and we even meet a new face called Mr Whatsit. Kids in Hawkins seem to adore him, especially Mike’s little sister Holly. But the big question is simple. Who is this strange new man?

Who is Mr Whatsit in Stranger Things season 5?

Mr Whatsit is actually Vecna. He is Henry Creel in disguise. The season opens with Will trapped in the Upside Down, running from a Demogorgon. The scene then shifts to the Wheeler home. Holly is setting the table and calling everyone for breakfast. She suddenly waves at someone outside the window. Later, she is seen talking to a man near the school fence. But when her teacher walks up, it looks like Holly is talking to thin air.

Things become clearer in the second episode. A Demogorgon attacks Holly inside her house. She runs to her mother Karen for help. The lights flicker. Ted, her father, is golfing outside, and when he comes in to fight the creature, he gets badly hurt. Karen also tries to defend her child but is knocked down. The Demogorgon grabs Holly and drags her into the Upside Down.

Mike and Nancy panic. They decide to find out if Mr Whatsit is involved. They enter Karen’s hospital room dressed as a nurse and a patient. They ask her everything she knows about the person Holly kept mentioning. Karen explains Holly described a tall man with a vest and a pocket watch. Holly believed he was gentle and kind. When Nancy asks if she ever mentioned a real name, Karen writes the word Henry. That is when they realise that Mr Whatsit is Vecna all along.

Vecna uses the name Mr Whatsit for a reason. In the book A Wrinkle in Time, there is a character named Mrs Whatsit. She is comforting and loved by children. By choosing a similar name, Vecna makes himself seem safe and friendly. He knows this will make it easier to lure children into his world. But apart from the borrowed name, he has nothing in common with her. She represents warmth. He represents danger.
