At just 26, Connor McCaffery has built an impressive basketball journey, first as a sharp-minded point guard for the University of Iowa, and now as a rising young coach at Butler University. But in recent years, his growing profile has also been linked to another star in the basketball world: WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark.
Their relationship, which began quietly in 2023, has since evolved into a meaningful and public partnership, one built on shared passion for the sport, heartfelt support, and a love that goes well beyond the court.
Connor McCaffery’s basketball career
Connor’s college basketball career was as impressive academically as it was athletically. He played six seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, earning five Academic All-Big Ten honours and tying the school’s all-time wins record with 111. He was also a two-sport athlete, excelling in baseball during his time at Iowa.
After graduating in May 2023 with degrees in finance and political science, Connor stepped into the professional basketball world as a team assistant for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers. By September 2024, he took the next big step in his career by joining Butler University as an assistant coach.
Butler’s head coach, Thad Matta, highlighted Connor’s strong basketball background, his playing experience, and his NBA exposure as major assets. Connor also comes from a basketball-loving family; his father, Fran McCaffery, served as head coach for Iowa for 14 years and recently accepted a coaching position at the University of Pennsylvania.
Although Connor’s mother once hoped he’d avoid the demanding world of coaching, it seems basketball is in his blood and his future.
Connor McCaffery and Caitlin Clark’s love story
Connor and Caitlin first met while they were both at the University of Iowa, bonding over a shared love of the game. Their friendship quietly blossomed into something more in April 2023. Four months later, Caitlin made things official by posting cosy photos of them together, captioning it “Best end to summer” with a heart emoji.
Since then, the couple has publicly celebrated their milestones. On their first anniversary in April 2024, they exchanged sweet tributes on Instagram. Connor wrote, “One year w the best… you never cease to amaze me,” while Caitlin’s post said, “You make every day better.”
This past April, the couple marked two years together with even more heartfelt posts. Caitlin called Connor her “favourite person,” and Connor shared a photo of them hand-in-hand, writing, “2 years. Keep being u.”
Their relationship appears strong, light-hearted, and full of mutual encouragement, often with a competitive twist. Caitlin once joked on social media that she hopes Connor will “finally find a way to outshoot me.”
Though neither has spoken publicly about engagement plans, their relationship is clearly thriving as they approach year three. Whether cheering each other on from the sidelines or simply spending time together, Caitlin and Connor show what it means to be a true team, on and off the court.
