“Leave the World Behind” may not fit the conventional mold of an apocalyptic thriller, but its captivating narrative and scenic allure have garnered attention despite its unconventional release circumstances.
The film’s late October 2023 premiere date coincided with the Writers’ Strike of ’23, leading to a lack of promotional activities from the cast. Nonetheless, the movie has earned favorable reviews, with critics commending the performances, even though the pacing leans toward a more deliberate and gradual unfolding of events. However, amidst the storyline’s chaos, viewers are particularly curious about the stunning locations showcased in the film and how they can experience those serene, verdant landscapes themselves.
Filming for “Leave the World Behind” primarily took place in New York State, particularly around Westchester County, in May 2022. Various scenes were shot in several locations across the area, including Pleasantville, Lewisboro, and the picturesque hamlet of Katonah nestled within Bedford, New York. The remote exterior shots in the film were predominantly captured in the Riverhead Township, as reported by the Riverhead Local newspaper.
The stunning 5,000-square-foot modern farmhouse featured in the film, known as the Open Corner, is situated in Old Westbury. This recently renovated architectural masterpiece, designed by John Winberry of a Long Island City firm, was chosen for its ability to capture sunlight at different angles throughout the day, resulting in breathtaking visuals that perfectly complement the film’s atmosphere. The house’s clean lines and striking white exterior juxtapose against the deteriorating world, while its open-concept design keeps the audience connected to the outside environment, adding to the contrasting ambiance.
The lush forest scenes portrayed in the film were filmed at FDR State Park near Yorktown Heights, New York. This park, known for its well-maintained wooded areas, has been a preferred filming location for numerous movies and related events, including appearances in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and the “Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience” in 2022.
To capture the stunning waterfront views integral to the film’s visuals, the crew ventured to Long Island’s scenic locales, including Smithtown, Riverhead, and Lloyd Harbor, to enrich the cinematic experience with breathtaking coastal landscapes.
