It seems there has been a whirlwind of Doctor Who updates and developments in recent times, particularly surrounding the casting and debuts of new Doctors. Ncuti Gatwa, known for his roles in Netflix’s “Sex Education” and as one of the Kens in “Barbie,” was announced as the Fifteenth Doctor in May 2022. However, the Doctor Who universe underwent significant changes, leading to some confusion about the timelines and appearances of the Doctors.
The recent special titled “The Power of the Doctor” saw Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor regenerate into David Tennant’s incarnation, confirming Tennant’s return as the Fourteenth Doctor. This special marks Tennant’s return to the sci-fi franchise for its 60th-anniversary year.
As for Ncuti Gatwa’s debut as the Fifteenth Doctor, it’s confirmed to take place in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special titled “The Church on Ruby Road.” This episode, airing on December 25, will introduce Gatwa’s Doctor alongside his new companion, Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson.
Traditionally, new Doctors often make brief appearances in the final moments of their predecessor’s last episode. Therefore, it’s highly likely that Ncuti Gatwa’s initial introduction as the Fifteenth Doctor might occur in the December 9 special, titled “The Giggle,” where the Fourteenth Doctor confronts Neil Patrick Harris’ returning villain, The Toymaker.
After his anticipated debut, Gatwa’s tenure as the Doctor seems promising. He is expected to lead Doctor Who into its upcoming season 14, set to premiere in the spring of 2024. Furthermore, Gatwa has already confirmed his commitment to the role for at least one more season, promising an exciting journey ahead for the Fifteenth Doctor and the Doctor Who series.
