The speculation about Cowell’s sexuality reached a peak in 2014 during the messy court trial of Tulisa Contostavlos, a judge on Cowell’s show, “The X Factor.” During the trial, a tape was played where Contostavlos’ personal assistant, Gareth Varey, and an undercover reporter discussed Cowell’s sexuality. Varey allegedly made claims suggesting that Cowell is gay and had been involved with men. In response to these claims, Cowell’s attorneys released a statement denying the allegations and describing them as untrue.
Cowell’s legal team addressed the claims made by Varey, stating that such discussions about someone’s sexual orientation were outdated. They asserted that Cowell, in fact, was not gay, but even if he were, he would have been honest about it. The attorneys emphasized Cowell’s reputation for honesty and candidness, and they felt compelled to respond because the allegations implied that Cowell had been untruthful in the public eye.
Subsequently, Varey apologized for his comments, stating that he was very drunk during the conversation and didn’t understand why he made those statements. He attributed his remarks to being intoxicated and trying to provide the tabloid with the type of information they were seeking.
Despite the persistent rumors and speculations, Cowell has largely chosen to ignore them and focus on his personal life. He has been open about his engagement to Lauren Silverman, whom he proposed to on Christmas Eve in 2021, the place where they initially met. The couple has a son, Eric Cowell, and Cowell has expressed his enjoyment of fatherhood, admitting that initially, parenting was a bit challenging for him. However, he has grown to cherish the experience, spending time with Eric and even jokingly grooming him to potentially take over the business one day.
Cowell has adopted a casual and spontaneous approach to planning his wedding with Silverman, expressing a desire to make it fun and avoiding setting a specific date or location.
