In Marvel’s “Loki,” the Time Variance Authority (TVA) stands out as one of the most intriguing elements of the series, blending an otherworldly atmosphere with the mundane familiarity of an office setting. Director Kate Herron sheds light on some of the influences behind the creation of the TVA, citing two distinct genres: action and romance.
Herron explains that she and cinematographer Autumn Durald aimed to infuse the TVA with a sense of realism despite its existence outside of space and time. To achieve this, they drew inspiration from two iconic films: “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” Both movies utilize practical sets that seamlessly blend with fantastical elements, creating immersive worlds that feel tangible yet imaginative.
In particular, Herron points to a scene in “Loki” where Owen Wilson’s Mobius accompanies Tom Hiddleston’s Loki through the TVA. The entire sequence, from the elevator ride to the time theatre, was filmed in one continuous shot using a steadicam. This technique enhances the audience’s connection to the characters, making them feel like they are experiencing the journey alongside them.
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” directed by Edgar Wright, is praised for its innovative fusion of video game and comic book aesthetics. Released in 2010, the film predates the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rise to prominence and showcases playful visual storytelling that resonates with “Loki’s” inventive approach.
On the other hand, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman, explores themes of love and memory through a surreal and introspective lens. Herron acknowledges the film’s profound impact on storytelling and its ability to delve into complex emotional territory.
Both “Scott Pilgrim” and “Eternal Sunshine” offer rich cinematic experiences that have left a lasting impression on audiences and filmmakers alike. Herron’s decision to draw inspiration from these films speaks to her desire to infuse “Loki” with depth, creativity, and emotional resonance, elevating it beyond the typical superhero fare.
