Leatherman’s Pocket Survival Tool (PST) has become an iconic staple in the world of multi-tools and pocket survival gear, renowned for its versatility and compact design. Developed by Tim Leatherman in the mid-1970s, the PST was born out of practical necessity during a budget road trip through Europe.
Facing frequent mechanical and plumbing issues with his car during the trip, Leatherman realized that his conventional pocket knife was inadequate for the tasks at hand. He envisioned a tool that could combine the functionalities of a knife and a pair of pliers, along with other useful features like screwdrivers and files, all in a portable and easy-to-carry design.
Returning to the United States, Leatherman embarked on the journey of designing and prototyping his ideal tool in his garage. After years of trial, error, and refinement, he finalized the design for the Pocket Survival Tool, incorporating essential features such as pliers, wire cutters, a knife, a saw, and a can opener.
However, bringing his invention to market was not without its challenges. Leatherman faced numerous rejections from potential manufacturers before finally finding success in 1983 through a partnership with college friend Steve Berliner. Together, they founded the Leatherman Tool Group and launched the Pocket Survival Tool to the public.
Despite a slow start, Leatherman tools gained popularity, particularly among DIY enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. Over the years, Leatherman has expanded its product line to include a wide range of variations on the original design, catering to diverse needs and preferences. From compact models like the Micra to heavy-duty options like the Super Tool 300, Leatherman offers tools for every task and situation.
