Robert De Niro, a Hollywood legend known for portraying tough characters on screen, demonstrated his real-life resilience during a recent press conference outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump was being tried for falsifying business records. The trial, dubbed the “hush money trial,” revolves around allegations that Trump made payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an affair they had in the mid-2000s.
At the press conference hosted by the Joe Biden campaign, De Niro voiced his support for Trump’s opponent. However, as he left the courthouse, he faced a barrage of insults from pro-Trump protesters, including being called a “wannabe,” a “paid sell-out,” and a “nobody” whose “movies suck.”
Despite his storied career and numerous accolades, De Niro responded to the insults with surprising restraint, asserting, “You’re not going to intimidate… That’s what Trump does. … We are going to fight back.” He also added a blunt “F*** you” to one particularly vocal protester, a moment perhaps more satisfying than any eloquent rebuttal.
The incident underscores the intense political divide in the United States, exacerbated by Trump’s refusal to accept his electoral defeat in 2019. Despite lacking evidence, Trump continues to claim the election was “stolen,” while facing accusations ranging from inciting the Capitol insurrection to various instances of misconduct and fraud.
Amidst the chaos, one fan managed to shout out their appreciation for De Niro’s iconic role in “Taxi Driver,” a reminder that amidst political turmoil, some still hold onto the simple joys of cinema.
