The Met Gala—the glitziest, most star-packed fashion event of the year—is coming up soon, and everyone’s buzzing about what the celebrities will wear. Every year, the Gala has a special theme and dress code, which gives stars a chance to get super creative and show off their unique style. For 2025, the theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
This theme ties into the Costume Institute’s big spring exhibition for 2025, which focuses on the style and history of Black menswear. The dress code is called “Tailored for You,” meaning guests are encouraged to wear tailored outfits but in whatever way they want—there’s no one strict look they have to follow. Vogue explains that this dress code is a nod to the exhibition’s spotlight on menswear, so think sharp suits, dapper styles, and lots of personal flair.
The inspiration for the theme actually comes from a book written in 2009 by Monica L. Miller, called Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. It’s all about the tradition of Black dandyism—a fancy way of saying dressing smartly and stylishly, often with a deep cultural meaning. The exhibition breaks this theme down into 12 different sections, each representing a different vibe or quality, like Ownership, Presence, Freedom, Heritage, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism (fancy word for worldly style). This gives guests tons of options for how to interpret the theme and dress their own way.
On Good Morning America, the Met explained that the event looks at the lasting impact of Black men’s style over the years, through the lens of this dandy culture—how it’s evolved from way back in history right up to today. Monica L. Miller said dandyism means “dressing wisely and well,” which is exactly what the event wants to celebrate.
Now, about the Tailored for You dress code—PEOPLE says it’s designed to be super open and flexible. Basically, it’s an invitation to get creative and express yourself through your outfit instead of following a strict dress rule. So, whether celebrities show up in classic suits, bold, artsy takes on menswear, or something totally unexpected, the sky’s the limit.
Of course, all this excitement has fans itching to see what stars will wear—or maybe what fashion disasters will happen—at Hollywood’s biggest charity event dedicated to fashion.
This year’s Met Gala is shaping up to be extra special, with a star-studded lineup of co-chairs including Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo, race car champ Lewis Hamilton, rappers A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams, basketball superstar LeBron James, and fashion icon Anna Wintour. Mark your calendars—the gala is set for Monday, May 5, 2025.
