Ukraine passes new law that could hurt its EU dreams

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has signed a new law. Many people think this law could make it harder for Ukraine to join the European Union (EU). The law gives more power to Ukraine’s top prosecutor, taking control away from two important anti-corruption agencies.

These two agencies, NABU and SAP, were made to fight corruption. They were supposed to work independently, without pressure from the government. But now, people worry they can’t do their jobs freely anymore.

This law has upset many people in Ukraine. For the first time since the war with Russia began in 2022, large protests have broken out. Citizens are afraid that their country is moving backwards.

Leaders in the European Union are also very concerned. The head of the European Commission called President Zelenskyy and asked for an explanation. She said Ukraine must follow democratic rules and fight corruption if it wants to join the EU.

Other European countries, like Germany and Sweden, have also warned Ukraine. They say this law could hurt Ukraine’s chances of joining the EU. They believe anti-corruption agencies must stay independent to keep the country honest and fair.

Some EU leaders are now worried about giving more money to Ukraine. They say financial help depends on Ukraine making progress with its justice system and keeping corruption low.

In short, this new law has made many people nervous. If Ukraine does not fix the problem, it may have to wait longer to join the EU.
