The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team will visit the White House on Tuesday to commemorate their respective national championships from last season. The event, hosted by President Joe Biden, will honor the two powerhouse programs that triumphed in the NCAA tournaments.
For UConn, the visit marks their fifth trip to the White House following their victory in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Led by head coach Dan Hurley, the Huskies stormed through the tournament as a No. 4 seed, capping their title run with a dominant 76-59 win over San Diego State in the national championship game. The victory solidified UConn’s status as one of the most decorated programs in men’s college basketball, with five national titles since 1999.
Coach Hurley remakred the White House visit as a special moment for the team as well as the University of Connecticut.He expressed that the team is proud to represent the school and are elated to celebrate this achievement with the President.
The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s team, under the leadership of head coach Dawn Staley, will also be celebrated for their remarkable season, which culminated in their second NCAA title in program history. The Gamecocks, began the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, completed an undefeated season with a 64-49 victory over Iowa in the championship game, further cementing their status as a powerhouse in women’s college basketball.
“We’re thrilled to be honored at the White House,” Staley said. Staley remarked the visit as an incredible way to cap off the historic season.
The White House visit has become a tradition for NCAA champions, offering a moment of recognition and celebration for the athletes, coaches, and universities. Both UConn and South Carolina will be celebrated for their excellence and the dedication that led them to the pinnacle of college basketball.
