In a move aimed at bolstering driver safety, Uber has announced a new rider verification feature, allowing customers to have their personal information cross-checked against third-party databases. This additional safety measure enables Uber to confirm the identities of riders, reducing risks for drivers and enhancing the overall security of the platform.
Riders who opt to verify their identities can upload a government-issued ID to the Uber app, adding a layer of authenticity. Verified users will receive a special badge on their account, visible to drivers before they accept ride or delivery requests. This step, according to Uber, is designed to provide drivers with greater peace of mind when accepting trips, knowing they are dealing with verified individuals.
Speaking at a safety event in Washington, D.C., Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi revealed that the company has already banned approximately 15,000 accounts for using fake or inappropriate names. These new verification tools aim to curb this trend and prevent fraudulent activities that could endanger drivers. “Our goal is to create a safer, more transparent experience for our drivers and riders alike,” Khosrowshahi said.
The initiative is part of Uber’s broader efforts to enhance safety across its platform, following reports of incidents where drivers were misled or put at risk by unverified accounts. The verification badge will serve as a visible assurance to drivers, who can make more informed decisions when accepting ride requests.
Uber’s decision comes as ride-hailing platforms face increasing pressure to improve safety protocols. By implementing rider verification, Uber hopes to foster greater trust between drivers and riders, while reducing the likelihood of scams or dangerous encounters. The company is optimistic that these changes will contribute to a more secure and reliable service for both drivers and customers.
