President Donald Trump recently explained his strategy for a military operation in Venezuela during a television interview. He made it clear that he views this situation differently than the war in Iraq from years ago. His main point was that the United States did not keep the oil in Iraq but this time he plans to do exactly that. He believes that taking control of the oil is a necessary part of the mission to help both countries.

The president mentioned that he has wanted to take this approach for a long time. He recalled suggesting back in 2016 that the government should have kept the oil in past conflicts. Now he intends to have American oil companies go into Venezuela to fix their crumbling facilities. He expects these businesses to spend a lot of money to get the industry working again. Afterward they would be paid back through the money made from selling the oil.

This plan has caused a lot of debate among experts and lawmakers. Many are worried about the legal and political problems that could come from the U.S. taking over another country’s resources. Some critics say this sounds like the same talk that led to failed missions in the past. Meanwhile white house officials have not yet shared the specific details of how this plan will actually work.

The situation on the ground in Venezuela has changed very quickly. This past Saturday a U.S. military raid in the capital city led to the capture of the country’s leader Nicolás Maduro. He and his wife were taken into custody and the U.S. announced it would run the country for a while. Even though a local official was named as a temporary leader the president made it clear that he is the one in charge.

A special team of high-ranking officials has been put together to manage the transition. This group includes the Secretary of State and the Vice President among others.  They are working on ways to stabilize the country and restart the oil production within the next year and a half. The president is confident that with enough money and effort they can turn the situation around.
