President Donald Trump announced that his envoy, Steve Witkoff, had a productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Trump posted the update on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying that “great progress was made” during the meeting.
Trump also mentioned that he had updated European allies on what was discussed. He stressed that everyone involved agrees the war needs to end soon. According to him, further steps toward peace will continue in the coming days and weeks.
This meeting comes after Trump increased pressure on Russia to join peace talks. His administration recently raised tariffs on India as part of this plan, because India continues to import oil from Russia. By targeting India’s trade, the U.S. hopes to reduce the flow of money to Russia and push it closer to the negotiating table.
So far, the White House has not shared specific details about what was achieved in the meeting or what kind of peace deal could be on the table. However, the message from Trump is clear: he wants to bring the war to an end and believes these talks are moving in the right direction.
