Trinity Rodman, a standout player for the USWNT and a top MVP candidate for the Washington Spirit, suffered a worrying back injury during an NWSL match against the Kansas City Current on September 20. This injury was especially concerning as it happened in a game where the Spirit lost 3-0, leaving them in a tight playoff race with only six matches left in the season.

Rodman was visibly in distress after the injury and initially managed to walk off the field. However, she later required a wheelchair to exit, covering her face with a towel to hide her pain. After the incident, she returned to the bench with an ice pack pressed against her lower back.

As of now, there’s not much information available regarding the severity of her injury. Spirit head coach Jonatan Giraldez stated he had no updates immediately after the game, but assured fans that more details would come once the team returns to Washington, D.C. for further evaluations.

Rodman, who has a history of back spasms dating back to her rookie season in 2021, may be facing a recurrence of this issue. With eight goals this season, she ranks fourth in the NWSL, making her a crucial player for the Spirit’s playoff hopes.

How was Trinity Rodman injured?

In the 75th minute of the match, Trinity Rodman fell to the ground after attempting to shield the ball from Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga. What seemed like a routine play turned concerning when replays showed that Chawinga’s knee made contact with Rodman’s lower back.

Initially, Rodman hunched over, resting her hands on her hips, but then she dropped to her knees. After receiving treatment on the field for several minutes, she managed to walk off, but her condition quickly deteriorated. About five minutes later, she was seen being wheeled down the tunnel, visibly in pain. This sudden turn of events raised alarms for the Spirit and their fans as they awaited updates on her injury.
