Trent Grisham has been one of the most surprising players on the Yankees’ roster this season. After signing a one-year, $5 million deal in the offseason, the 28-year-old outfielder has put together a strong campaign, hitting 19 home runs and collecting 43 RBIs with a .250 batting average in 93 games. That’s a big improvement from last year, when he hit just nine home runs and batted .190 in 76 games.
Despite his success, Grisham may not be staying in the Bronx. According to Stephen Parello from FanSided, the Yankees might let him walk in free agency this winter. Originally a secondary piece in the Juan Soto trade, Grisham was once thought to be a DFA candidate heading into this year. Instead, he bounced back and became a key contributor. His improved performance even had him mentioned in trade talks at the deadline, but the Yankees held on to him.
The challenge now is roster space and future planning. Grisham and fellow outfielder Cody Bellinger are both set to hit free agency at the end of the season. If the Yankees choose to re-sign just one, Bellinger could have the edge due to his versatility and stronger track record.
Complicating matters further is the rise of top prospect Spencer Jones. The young outfielder has been tearing it up in Triple-A and was reportedly untouchable in trade talks. His likely promotion to the big leagues could leave no room for Grisham in 2025.
While the Yankees might move on, Grisham’s strong season should make him an attractive option for other teams in need of a power-hitting outfielder. He has rebuilt his value in a big way and could land a better contract elsewhere after what has turned into a career-best year.
