Fans of Tottenham Hotspur are facing a worrying moment this season. The club has been struggling badly in the Premier League and the results have started to raise an uncomfortable question.
Could Tottenham actually face relegation?
The north London club recently suffered another defeat after losing 2 to 1 against Fulham. That loss marked their 13th defeat in 28 league matches this season.
Even more concerning is their recent form. Spurs have now gone 10 straight league games without a win. Their last victory came in December with a 1 to 0 result against Crystal Palace.
With those results piling up, the club now sits dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Tottenham relegation history in the Premier League era
Despite the current panic among fans, Tottenham have never been relegated during the Premier League era.
The modern Premier League started in 1992 and Spurs have remained in the top division ever since.
The last time Tottenham were actually relegated from England’s top league was in 1977. That season they finished 22nd in the old First Division under manager Keith Burkinshaw.
Luckily for Spurs supporters, the club bounced back quickly. They won promotion the very next season in 1978 and returned to the top tier after just one year.
Before that, Tottenham had also been relegated in 1935. That drop turned into a much longer stay outside the top division. The club did not return until 1950 after winning the second division title.
In total, Tottenham have been relegated 4 times in their long history.
Tottenham worst Premier League finish under Ange Postecoglou
The club’s worst season in the Premier League era came recently under manager Ange Postecoglou.
During the 2024 to 2025 season Tottenham finished in 17th place with 38 points from 38 matches. That position kept them above the relegation zone but it was still a disappointing campaign for such a big club.
The only bright moment that year came in European competition. Tottenham managed to win the UEFA Europa League final with a 1 to 0 victory against Manchester United in Bilbao. That win ended a 17 year wait for a major trophy.
Still, their league form remained poor throughout that season.
Could Tottenham be relegated from the Premier League this season
At the moment Spurs sit in 16th place with 29 points from 26 games. That leaves them just 4 points above the relegation zone.
While it still seems unlikely that a club with Tottenham’s resources would actually drop out of the Premier League, the situation is becoming uncomfortable.
Teams below them are starting to show signs of improvement. West Ham United have recently picked up important results and could close the gap soon. Meanwhile Nottingham Forest are also fighting hard to move away from danger.
Tottenham’s upcoming fixtures will also test them. They still have to face strong opponents like Liverpool and Chelsea before the season ends.
The good news for Spurs fans is that several of their remaining matches are against teams in the bottom half of the table. Games against clubs like Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United could prove decisive.
For now, Tottenham still control their own fate. But if their poor run continues, the unthinkable conversation about relegation may only grow louder.
