Tom Cruise is back in the spotlight with Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, and it’s already creating buzz around the world. But alongside the film’s high-octane action and global premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Cruise has hinted that this may truly be the end of the road for Ethan Hunt.
During an interview at the premiere, when asked about the title, the host teasingly suggested that “The Final Reckoning” might not actually be the final one. Cruise quickly responded, “It’s the final. It’s not called Final for nothing.” In other words, this could really be Ethan Hunt’s last mission.
For fans who’ve followed the series for years, that’s a big deal. The newest film is a direct follow-up to Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1, which came out in 2023. Originally, this second part was going to be titled Dead Reckoning Part 2, but the name was later changed to Final Reckoning, which only stirred more speculation about whether Cruise was hanging up his spy gear for good.
After its debut at Cannes, the movie was released in select international markets like India, Japan, and Korea.
This is the eighth film in the franchise, which kicked off in 1996 and turned Cruise into an unstoppable action hero. From Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000 to Ghost Protocol in 2011, Rogue Nation in 2015, and Fallout in 2018, the series has only grown bigger, louder, and more intense.
The Final Reckoning brings back fan favorites like Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, and adds new faces like Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Hannah Waddingham, and Esai Morales.
Whether or not this is truly the end, one thing’s certain: Cruise is going out with a bang—and fans around the world are watching closely to see how this final chapter unfolds.
