Tom Cruise, long celebrated as one of Hollywood’s top action stars, isn’t just resting on his spy franchise legacy. While Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning marks the latest chapter in that saga, Cruise has big plans that extend beyond Ethan Hunt’s adventures.
In a recent chat with Australia’s Today, Cruise revealed he’s actively developing sequels to both Top Gun: Maverick and the 1990 NASCAR classic Days of Thunder. He shared that the Top Gun: Maverick sequel has been in the works for a long time—he said it took 35 years just to bring the first sequel to life. Now, he and his team are exploring multiple story ideas and possibilities for these iconic films.
The success of Top Gun: Maverick has been staggering, raking in over $1.4 billion globally and even snagging an Oscar nomination for Best Picture—an achievement that’s clearly fueling Cruise’s excitement for more.
He also mentioned that he’s constantly juggling projects: shooting, prepping, and post-production are always happening simultaneously. Recently, he finished working on a collaboration with acclaimed director Alejandro Iñárritu, describing the experience as “extraordinary,” though details about the film remain under wraps.
And of course, Cruise continues his strong creative partnership with Christopher McQuarrie, consistently working on new projects with him.
For now, fans can still catch Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning in theaters, while looking forward to what Cruise has in store next.
