Tom Cruise made a notable appearance on the second day of the Cannes Film Festival, attending a photocall with his cast before walking the red carpet for the premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. The film is one of the most eagerly awaited premieres of the event.
During his interaction with the media ahead of the screening, Cruise skillfully avoided questions about the future of the Mission: Impossible franchise. He encouraged everyone to simply enjoy the film, describing it as the culmination of 30 years of work. “Just let us show the movie tonight,” he said, emphasizing that after such a long journey, it’s best to experience the film firsthand.
Cruise will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt alongside a strong cast including Hannah Waddingham, Hayley Atwell, and Pom Klementieff. The film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie, was also present, supporting the team at the festival.
The Top Gun star reflected on the experience, saying, “We’ve had an amazing time doing it and it’s been a lot of fun. We just want you all to enjoy this and know everything — the culmination has come to this moment right now.”
Cruise has been part of the Mission: Impossible franchise since its very beginning. The first film premiered in 1996 and was adapted from the 1960s TV series of the same name. Over the years, the franchise has seen several directors, with Brian De Palma helming the original film before McQuarrie took over.
On discussing McQuarrie’s role, Cruise praised the director’s unique perspective on the franchise, saying, “It is that journey and our lives are the sum of our choices. McQ has a perspective on the franchise that was very unique in the story that he wanted to tell.” He added, “His ability to pull those moments out and create this kind of emotional story was really something special.”
