A new four-part docu-series is set to celebrate the life and work of legendary director Tim Burton, offering an in-depth look at his iconic career through the lens of his most trusted collaborators. Directed by Tara Wood (21 Years: Richard Linklater), the series features commentary from a star-studded lineup of actors, including Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Helena Bonham Carter — all of whom have worked closely with Burton over the years.

The documentary takes a unique approach by avoiding an interview with Burton himself. Instead, it relies on the voices of those who know him best, providing a more personal and untutored perspective on his creative process. This method offers a rare glimpse into the director’s world, presenting a collection of intimate interviews, never-before-seen footage, and personal reflections from Burton’s collaborators.

Among the highlights is Johnny Depp’s reflection on his early experiences working with Burton, particularly on Edward Scissorhands. Depp recalls being deeply moved by the screenplay, describing how the character of Edward resonated with him on a profound level, feeling almost like a reflection of his own self. “What I felt from reading that screenplay was … it had passed through everything, anything solid and went to the very core of whatever I am,” Depp shares. He goes on to praise Burton as an “auteur” and “visionary,” emphasizing his ability to create rich, emotional, and visually striking stories.

The series also delves into Burton’s evolution as a filmmaker, with a special focus on his early years in California, showcasing rare home films and images from his formative years. The doc also takes viewers through the making of some of Burton’s most beloved films, like Beetlejuice, Sweeney Todd, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Notably, the documentary includes never-before-seen stop-motion shorts and rare paintings from the director himself, further adding to the allure of his gothic whimsy.

The docu-series is already generating buzz, having premiered its first two episodes at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, with global sales managed by WME. With its mix of personal insights and behind-the-scenes footage, this docu-series promises to be the most comprehensive exploration yet of Tim Burton’s incredible career and lasting legacy in cinema.
