Meta’s social media app Threads has finally pulled ahead of X in a huge way on mobile phones. This shift shows a big change in how we use social media today. As of early January 2026, Threads hit 141.5 million daily users on mobile devices like iPhones and Androids. At the same time, X dropped to about 125 million daily mobile users. This means more people are now opening the Threads app for their daily scroll than Elon Musk’s platform.
While Threads is winning on phones, X is still the king of the desktop web. Millions of people still visit the X website on their computers every month. Threads is still mostly an app-first place, with very few people using its web version. Experts say the move to Threads is a long-term habit that is slowly building up. It is not just a quick reaction to the drama happening over at X.
X has been in hot water recently because of its AI chatbot called Grok. People found out the bot was being used to create fake, explicit images of women and even minors. This sparked a major investigation by the California Attorney General. Because of these safety concerns, other apps like Bluesky are also seeing more downloads. People seem to be looking for safer places to talk online as these controversies grow.
In India, the situation is a bit different. X still has a massive lead on the web there, holding nearly all the traffic for microblogging sites. However, Meta is working hard to change that. They are pushing Threads heavily through Instagram and Facebook. Because of this, Threads already hit over 150 million daily users globally late last year. With new features coming out all the time, Meta is clearly trying to make Threads the new home for our online conversations.
