The Oscars are finally recognizing the hard work of stunt performers by introducing a new category for Achievement in Stunt Design. This is something that fans and filmmakers have been advocating for years, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on April 10. However, this new category won’t be awarded until the 100th Oscars in 2028, which will honor films released in 2027.
In an official statement, Academy President Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer emphasized the importance of stunt work in cinema, saying, “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an important part of movies. We’re proud to honor the hard work and creativity of these artists.”
Stunt crews are responsible for many of the most exhilarating moments in films, like intense car chases, intricate fight scenes, and daring stunts. Up until now, however, the Oscars had never had a category to formally recognize their contributions, even though other award shows like the Screen Actors Guild Awards have long acknowledged their achievements.
One of the major advocates for this new category is Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick franchise, who has been vocal about the need for an Oscar to recognize stunt performers. He has even met with Academy members who supported the idea. Actor Ryan Reynolds has also spoken out in support, especially while promoting Deadpool & Wolverine, commending the film’s stunt team.
For many, this new award is long overdue. Action-packed films like Mission: Impossible and John Wick have gained worldwide recognition in large part because of the remarkable stunt work that makes their action scenes so thrilling. Fans and industry professionals are excited that the Academy is finally giving stunt performers the recognition they deserve.
That being said, there are still some details to be worked out. The full rules for the new category, including who exactly will be eligible for the award—whether it’s stunt coordinators, performers, or both—won’t be announced until 2027. It’s also unclear whether movies will be judged based on their overall stunt work or if only one standout stunt sequence will be submitted for consideration.
While there’s still some waiting to do, the stunt community will finally get their moment in the spotlight at the Oscars in the near future.
