The Conjuring: Last Rites, the ninth and reportedly final film in the popular Conjuring series, will stream on HBO Max starting Friday, November 21. It will also air on linear TV the next day, Saturday, November 22, at 8 PM.
Directed by Michael Chaves, the movie stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga returning as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The story is loosely based on the Smurl Haunting case. It follows the Warrens as they face a terrifying paranormal event linked to their first ghostly encounter. The film also features Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Tony Spera, and others.
This movie closes a 12-year-long franchise that started with James Wan’s 2013 original The Conjuring. The universe grew to include three Annabelle films and two The Nun spinoffs. Michael Chaves, who directed The Curse of La Llorona, makes his first Conjuring film here. James Wan and Peter Safran, creators of the Conjuring Universe, produce the film to maintain continuity.
The plot also focuses on the Warrens’ family life, especially their daughter Judy, adding emotional depth to the supernatural horror. The screenplay was written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with story credit to Johnson-McGoldrick and Wan. Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes created the original characters.
HBO Max will offer a full franchise marathon on Saturday, November 22. It starts at 7:35 a.m. with The Nun, followed by The Nun II at 9:15 a.m., Annabelle at 11:08 a.m., Annabelle: Creation at 12:50 p.m., The Conjuring at 2:43 p.m., The Conjuring 2 at 4:38 p.m., and The Conjuring: Last Rites at 8:00 p.m.
Even though Last Rites is called the final chapter, its success hints the franchise might continue. HBO Max is already developing a prequel series featuring younger Ed and Lorraine Warren.
