The new trailer for Materialists gives us a sneak peek into a tangled love story involving Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. This A24 film, directed by Oscar-nominee Celine Song, is already one of the most talked-about movies coming out this year.
The story centers around Lucy (played by Johnson), an ambitious matchmaker who seems to have mastered the art of pairing others up but struggles with her own love life. According to the official summary, Lucy’s business is thriving—until she finds herself caught in a complicated and toxic love triangle with a perfect new man and her flawed ex. This messy situation starts to put her clients’ happiness at risk.
The trailer starts by showing Lucy at work, juggling her matchmaking clients with confidence and skill. A voiceover says, “No one plays the game better than Lucy, but love isn’t part of her equation,” hinting that while she’s a pro at setting others up, her own heart is a different story.
Things heat up when we see Lucy and John (Chris Evans) arguing in the middle of a street. John’s frustration comes through when he asks, “Do you know how hard it is to make you happy?” Then the mood shifts to a fun meet-cute with Henry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), the “Mr. Perfect” who shows up at one of Lucy’s client parties. Henry quickly becomes the ideal guy, making Lucy feel special and valued—something she openly tells him.
But just as things start looking up with Henry, Lucy keeps getting pulled back to her imperfect ex, John, leaving her stuck between two very different kinds of love. The trailer teases that the film will explore this modern take on what true love really means.
Celine Song, who wrote and directed Materialists, is known for her work on the critically acclaimed romantic drama Past Lives (2023), which was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. The film is produced by heavy hitters Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler from Killer Films, along with David Hinojosa of 2AM.
Materialists is set to arrive in theaters on June 13, 2025, promising a fresh, emotional story about love, choices, and the messy ways relationships really work.
