The Last of Us has officially been renewed for a third season, ahead of the release of its highly anticipated second season. This announcement was made just before the sophomore season was set to debut on April 13. However, while the renewal for Season 3 has been confirmed, HBO has not clarified whether this will be the final season of the show.
Creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin had previously shared their vision of concluding the story across four seasons, suggesting that Season 3 could be part of wrapping up the series. The second season, which will consist of seven episodes, will continue the journey in the post-apocalyptic world based on the popular video game.
Francesca Orsi, the head of HBO Drama Series and Films, expressed the network’s immense pride in the upcoming season, calling it a “masterful” achievement. She also praised the cast and crew for their dedication and passion, and she shared that everyone involved is excited to bring the powerful storytelling of Druckmann and Mazin to life in the third season as well.
The early renewal of the show for Season 3 likely stems from the enormous success of its debut season. When the first season aired, HBO revealed that the series had surpassed 30 million viewers, a massive milestone.
This isn’t the first time HBO has renewed a show before the current season’s premiere. For example, they renewed The White Lotus for a fourth season before the third season even launched, and the third season of that show went on to break viewership records.
The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world, following a global pandemic that has destroyed civilization. The official synopsis describes the plot as focusing on a hardened survivor who must escort a 14-year-old girl, who may be humanity’s last hope. The series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles.
