The highly anticipated The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, starring Elisabeth Moss and Yvonne Strahovski, has finally arrived, following a long wait since Season 5 aired in 2022. Given the time gap, fans may need a quick refresher on the key events that unfolded in the last season. Here’s a recap of the most important moments from Season 5:
June’s Uncertainty About Her Daughter’s Fate
June, now living in Canada, is focused on rescuing her daughter, Hannah, and dismantling Gilead. In Season 5, U.S. government operative Mark Tuello works tirelessly to find Hannah, causing both June and Luke increasing anxiety. Tensions rise when they discover that Hannah is being groomed for an early marriage in Gilead. Tuello eventually tracks her location, but their military operation to save her fails. This deepens June and Luke’s desperation to rescue Hannah from her grim future in Gilead.
Serena Shoots Ezra
Serena, who is pregnant, experiences a dramatic shift in her life after her husband Fred’s death. In Canada, she is treated like a handmaid, constantly monitored. Her situation takes another twist when the family she’s staying with decides to kill June. Serena requests to accompany them in the mission, and asks for a gun. However, instead of shooting June, Serena shoots Ezra, the man assigned to protect her. This act leads to an unlikely alliance between Serena and June as they go on the run together. Serena goes into labor during this time and, with June’s help, gives birth to a son named Noah in a barn. Despite attempting to escape, Serena is eventually caught by an immigration officer and sent back to her restricted living conditions. However, she later manages to flee with Noah.
Aunt Lydia’s Growing Protectiveness Towards the Handmaids
Aunt Lydia begins to show more concern for the handmaids, especially after Janine lashes out at Mrs. Putnam. Aunt Lydia refers to the handmaids as “my girls” and attempts to send Janine back to the Putnam house. But things take a turn when Janine confronts Mrs. Putnam, resulting in her arrest. Aunt Lydia starts to question Janine’s actions and appears to be experiencing internal turmoil. This could signal a shift in Aunt Lydia’s loyalties, possibly setting the stage for a significant change in her behavior in the upcoming season.
June’s Violent Attack and Narrow Escape
In the finale of Season 5, June is brutally attacked, putting her life in danger. Luke steps in to save her, fighting off the attacker, who later dies, leading to legal complications for Luke. June, Luke, and their daughter Nicole attempt to flee Toronto, but they are separated at the train station. Luke chooses to stay behind, allowing June and Nicole to escape. As June boards the train with Nicole, she unexpectedly comes across Serena and her newborn son, Noah. This encounter raises questions about the evolving dynamic between June and Serena in the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
These major plot points from Season 5 set the stage for what promises to be an intense and unpredictable sixth season. Fans are eager to see how these storylines will unfold and what new twists await the characters.
