The Apothecary Diaries Season 3: Cast Updates
No major new cast announcements have been made yet for Season 3, but the core voice actors are widely expected to return:
- Aoi Yūki as Maomao
- Takeo Otsuka as Jinshi
Supporting cast from Seasons 1 and 2 should largely reprise their roles, as is standard for the series. Fans can look forward to more of Maomao’s sharp wit and the evolving dynamic with Jinshi.
The Apothecary Diaries Season 3: What to Expect in Season 3
Season 2 of the anime (airing Winter/Spring of 2025) is adapted from the first four light novels and concludes significant story arcs involving rear palace intrigue, Shi Clan conflict, Gyokuyou’s pregnancy/childbirth, and relationship development between Maomao and Jinshi. There was a lovely scene at the end between the two leads, the fate of several characters (Shisui/Loulan is alive!) was revealed, and Maomao has returned to a more “normal” life outside of the palace; however, she still has a connection to Jinshi.
Season 3 will likely take place in an entirely different area than the rear palace and potentially be set in a “new land,” such as the Western Capital or areas related to Empress Gyokuyou ‘s homeland. This will allow for a larger world with new mysteries as well as diplomatic complexities and possible dangers (plagues, unknown insects/diseases, or political unrest).
There will be a significant amount of additional emotional content and “jinmao” moments between Maomao and Jinshi, as hinted by the author. Their relationship will develop further as Jinshi’s identity is revealed and Maomao’s status has changed from a servant to that of Kan Lakan’s daughter.
There will also be investigations into damaged farming villages, issues with medicine, family backstories (including Lakan and his adopted son), and the lingering effects of political fallout. The focus will shift to outside adventures while still maintaining the mixture of clever solutions to problems and subtle romance that has been present throughout the series.
Season Three should retain the slow-burning romance development of Season Two, the complex plot structure from Seasons One and Two, as well as an extension of Maomao’s inventive and creative character, plus provide an expansion of the setting to better define the reasons and motivations for past actions, as well as provide depth to new characters. Fans of Jinshi and Maomao have begun discussing the potential world that can be created with expanded interactions between these two characters; therefore, be sure to check back often during the lead-up to the official release on October 1st, 2026, at either the official website or TOHO Animation for trailers, key visuals, and exact premiere dates. As always, the series will be great because it combines historical drama, mystery, and understated romance into one great show.
