Tecno, a Chinese technology company known for pushing the boundaries of smartphone design, has introduced its latest innovation: the Phantom Ultimate 2, a triple foldable concept phone. This ambitious device marks Tecno’s first foray into triple foldable technology, offering a unique approach to the foldable phone market, which giants like Samsung currently dominate.
Unveiled on Tuesday, the Phantom Ultimate 2 is designed to deliver a large-screen experience within a compact, pocket-sized device. Unlike traditional book-style folding phones, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which offer around 8-inch displays, the Phantom Ultimate 2 boasts a screen that unfurls to an impressive 10 inches. Despite this expansive display, Tecno has managed to maintain the device’s portability, with the phone measuring just 11 millimeters in thickness—a remarkable feat considering the complexities involved in triple-folding technology.
A major factor in the Phantom Ultimate 2’s slim design is its ultra-thin battery, measuring only 0.25 millimeters in thickness. Tecno has also emphasized the device’s durability, stating that the hinges have been tested for 300,000 folds, ensuring long-term reliability even with frequent use.
Tecno’s entrance into the foldable market is not entirely new. Last year, the company introduced its first flip phone, the Phantom V Flip 5G, alongside its book-style phone, the Phantom V Fold, on a global scale. These models are expected to see next-generation updates in September. Tecno’s foray into triple foldable technology aims to secure a larger portion of the expanding foldable phone market, projected to reach 25 million units by the end of 2024, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
A promotional video released by Tecno highlights various use cases for the Phantom Ultimate 2. Tecno has also introduced a “tent mode,” which allows face-to-face interactions in different languages, with real-time AI language translation. The company claims that the Phantom Ultimate 2 runs on software optimized for its unique trifold design, enhancing the overall user experience.
While triple-folding phones are not entirely new—Samsung and TCL have previously showcased similar concepts—none have made it to the commercial market. However, with Tecno’s active exploration of commercialization and the device expected to be available for hands-on experience early next year, the Phantom Ultimate 2 could be one of the first triple-folding phones to reach consumers.
