During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the singer opened up about attending her best friend Selena Gomez’s wedding to Benny Blanco — and she made it clear that the day was all about Selena, not her own engagement to Travis Kelce.
Taylor shared that she had given a heartfelt speech at the ceremony but was careful not to make it about herself. “I did make a speech, but I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement,” she told Fallon. “No one wants you to be like, ‘Hey, I know this is your wedding day, but look at my ring.’ So I was like, don’t mention it.” Instead, she focused on celebrating Selena and how stunning she looked on her big day, calling her “the most elegant, gorgeous person” and adding, “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day.”
When Jimmy asked what she said in her speech, Taylor gave a sweet peek into her words. She talked about their friendship, which has lasted nearly two decades, and even poked fun at their early fashion choices. “It was the year of deep, deep V-necks and aggressively colorful skinny jeans,” she joked. “Selena’s favorite outfit was a long tank top, skinny jeans, and a tiny little vest. I always looked like I was late for a cowboy-themed junior prom.” Taylor went on to say how grateful she was to have grown up alongside Selena and to now see her so happy and in love.
Selena later returned the love on Instagram, sharing a few unseen photos from her wedding and writing a touching note to Taylor. “In honor of SHOWGIRL… blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later, gator! I love you, Taylor Swift, forever and always,” she wrote, also giving a sweet nod to Taylor’s upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl.
