Sydney Sweeney is generating major Oscar buzz with her latest film Christy, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival to a standing ovation. The biographical drama follows the life of boxing legend Christy Martin, and Sweeney’s portrayal of the champion has been widely praised for its intensity and authenticity.
Directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the film with Mirrah Foulkes from a story by Katherine Fugate, Christy chronicles the highs and lows of Martin’s life—from grueling training sessions and personal struggles to her rise to global fame. The trailer showcases the challenges Christy faced, including conflicts with family, trainers, and the boxing establishment, highlighting both her triumphs and struggles.
Sweeney underwent a remarkable physical transformation for the role, gaining 30 pounds and following a diet heavy in local delicacies and fast food to achieve Christy’s look. Her dedication extended to rigorous boxing training, which she executed to fully embody the character. The film also stars Katy O’Brian, Merritt Wever, Ben Foster, Ethan Embry, Chad L. Coleman, Valyn Hall, and Tony Cavalero in key roles.
Set for a theatrical release on November 7, Christy is being hailed as a potential career-defining role for Sweeney, with critics lauding her commitment, nuance, and the raw emotional depth she brings to the story of the boxing icon.
