The upcoming Disney+ K-drama Delusion starring Suzy and Kim Seon Ho has hit an unexpected snag. The production has reportedly decided to cancel its planned filming in China and will now continue shooting in South Korea instead. The sudden change has drawn attention, with many linking it to the backlash surrounding Jun Ji Hyun’s recent drama Tempest.
On October 15, the Delusion team addressed the reports, saying that the filming location is still being discussed and nothing has been finalized yet. However, several insiders claim that filming in China was originally scheduled for early to mid-October, and the change was made abruptly. It’s believed that Shanghai was supposed to serve as a key backdrop for the story.
The shift comes after Jun Ji Hyun reportedly faced criticism in China over a line from Tempest, which sparked anger among some Chinese viewers and led to speculation about her endorsement deals being affected. Although her agency clarified that the removal of promotional materials was pre-planned and denied any boycott, the incident seems to have made other Korean productions more cautious about filming or promoting in China.
As a result, Delusion has chosen to focus on domestic shoots for now, though reports suggest Vietnam is also being considered as a possible new location. The drama, also known by its alternate title Hypnosis, is a historical mystery set in 1935 Gyeongseong (present-day Seoul). It follows the story of a painter, played by Kim Seon Ho, who is tasked with painting a mysterious woman, portrayed by Suzy.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the reunion of the Start-Up co-stars, but with these filming challenges, it seems the production will need some extra time to finalize its direction.
