In an analysis of TV viewership throughout 2023, Nielsen revealed that “Suits” surpassed a record previously held by “The Office” for the number of minutes watched in a single year. The legal drama accumulated 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, edging ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership garnered by “The Office” in 2020.
While the total time watched is influenced by factors like the number of episodes and their duration, the achievement underscores Netflix’s dominance in the streaming landscape. “The Office” continued to attract a substantial audience even after its final episode aired on NBC in 2013, thanks to its availability on Netflix until early 2021. Similarly, “Suits,” which concluded on the USA network in 2019, gained renewed popularity after being acquired by Netflix.
The report outlines the top 10 most-streamed titles in 2023, including original and acquired streaming content, as well as the most-streamed movies. Notably, the absence of a single original title in the top 10 overall streaming chart suggests that 2023 lacked a major streaming event comparable to previous years. The most-streamed streaming original series of 2023 was “Ted Lasso,” with 16.9 billion minutes watched, emphasizing its popularity despite Apple TV+’s smaller subscriber base.
The top three most-streamed programs of 2023 were “Suits,” “Bluey,” and “NCIS,” indicating a mix of classic favorites and newer content. The dominance of children’s content in the movies chart, with titles like “Moana” and “Encanto,” suggests a strong family viewership trend.
According to Nielsen, streaming viewership in 2023 increased by 21% compared to 2022, demonstrating sustained growth. The report emphasizes the significant role of streaming platforms in shaping viewers’ entertainment choices, with American audiences collectively spending 21 million years’ worth of time streaming content in 2023.
