Dacre Montgomery, known for his role in Stranger Things, is stepping into the director’s chair for the first time with a new movie called The Engagement Party. Filming is set to start later this year. Not only is he directing, but he’ll also star in the comedy along with Lily Sullivan, Abbey Lee, and Arlo Green.

The movie is about two couples who come together to celebrate a big event. But things get complicated when a shared memory starts to feel unreliable, threatening their relationship. According to the official description, “With each wave crashing against the shore, the line between memory and manipulation blurs, forcing them to confront a question they’ve tried to forget: What really happened that night?”

What begins as a normal get-together turns into an awkward dinner party, especially after a surprising round of gift-giving and a major announcement.

The film is produced by Nick Batzias and Virginia Whitwell of GoodThing Productions, along with Ian Booth and Nash Edgerton. The script was written by Jory Anast, who previously worked with Montgomery on the film Went Up the Hill.

Talking to Deadline, Montgomery said he feels “honored” to direct and star in the film, which he believes carries an “extremely important and timely message.” He’s also excited to work with a “wonderful” team who will help bring the project to life.

The producers called The Engagement Party a “special” project, describing it as a bold and unique story about trauma, love, friendship, and consent. They praised both Montgomery and Anast as “brave and fearless” storytellers and said they are a joy to work with.

Aside from this film, Montgomery has other projects coming up, including Dead Man’s Wire directed by Gus Van Sant, which stars heavy hitters like Al Pacino, Bill Skarsgard, and Colman Domingo. He’ll also appear in Faces of Death from Legendary Entertainment, alongside singer Charlie XCX.
