Stevie Nicks has made her return to music with a new song titled The Lighthouse, marking her first original release in four years. This pro-choice anthem was inspired by the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, a decision that significantly affected women’s rights and deeply resonated with the legendary singer. Nicks shared her feelings about the ruling in a recent interview with People magazine, expressing her sadness at having to witness such a rollback of rights at the age of 76. She noted, “I find it very sad… I was like a sponge — it just went into me,” as she absorbed the news and its implications.

Motivated by her emotions, Nicks began writing the song after waking up one morning with the phrase “I have my scars” in her mind, which she described as unusual since she typically doesn’t write in the morning. Seizing the moment, she quickly jotted down her thoughts, transforming them into what she called a “long-form poem.”

Although she didn’t initially know the exact direction the song would take, Nicks found an instrumental that resonated with her and managed to record the track within just a few days. Remarkably, she used the original vocal take she recorded during that time, stating, “I never redid the vocal — it’s an original vocal — and it’s taken me two years.” The song is the result of a collaborative effort involving Nicks, Sheryl Crow, and producer Dave Cobb, with Nicks expressing gratitude for their contributions, particularly Crow’s help with production and Cobb’s work on the classical guitar chords.

Nicks has been on tour for the past two years, during which time she has been refining The Lighthouse, never expecting it to take so long to reach its final form.

Looking ahead, Stevie Nicks is set to perform The Lighthouse on Saturday Night Live on October 12, 2024, marking her first appearance on the show since 1983, when she was promoting her second solo album.
